but if they travel together, it will be 8mph.

A poorly phrased question. If they all walk for the same length of time at their own speeds, then it's just the average of the 3 speeds. If they all walk the same distance at their own speeds, then it's the total distance divided by the total time, i.e., 3x/(x/v1 + x/v2 + x/v3) = 9.729729... for any value of x.
