"The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus, the poem on the Statue of Liberty, is about welcoming new arrivals to the United States. The poem is easy to find online, and is only 14 lines long. Read it a couple of times. Then look up Nativism, also a very easy topic to research online. Compare the anti-immigrant Nativist philosophy with the American ideals expressed in the poem and you will have your answer.

Do your own homework. This question is ridiculously easy. Look up nativists in your textbook. Look up the poem written on the Statue of Liberty. The answer is so obvious that I'm sure even you can figure it out.

The Statue of Liberty was a practical joke played on America by the French, who hate us.

Well, nativists opposed immigration....and the SoL inscription is as follows:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

So do you think that the ideas expressed on the Statue are compatible with those of the nativists?
