Well, if you're going to read part of the bible, you mine as well read the whole thing. You can't just pick one book. The Bible isn't supposed to work like that.
I suggest starting at the beginning: Genesis of course. Start where everything came from: The Devil, Humans, Earth, everything.
If you're just totally against Genesis for some strange reason, my second choice would be Psalms. It's very beautiful and talks about Good vs Evil a lot.
I do suggest reading it all though.

Start by reading the book of James. Pay special attention to Chapter 4 verse 7. After reading this short book your mind will be revived. I would then read Job 28:28. You can buy a bible with reference pages. These references will lead you to whatever is on your mind.

The book of John is a good place to start. It gives basic and easy to understand information about Jesus and what He stood for.
After that the other gospels, then the rest of the New Testament. I'd read the New Testament a couple of times before starting on the Old which is harder for current thinkers to understand because of it's being under the Covenant of the Law instead of Grace.

Others seem to be pushing whole books. If you really want just a chapter, may I suggest First Corinthians, Chapter 13?
And perhaps Romans 6.

Well perhaps a Gospel, which contains alot of useful messages, or Revelation will show you what will happen to the devil and all his followers. Or Maybe Genesis and read it all the way through.
Another good help is study notes which will help you to look at things, I also recommend a prayer group or other religious gathering.
Good Luck!

John first then Romans. John is gospel but it doesn't just tell the story it explains it more. Romans is a letter written by Paul to the Roman church and it deals with all the issues people deal with today.
it's my favorite book!

You might consider going to Sunday School at a Church.
There are also lots of Bible study groups in Churches.
When it comes to choosing a church, try to stay in the mainstream, expecially if the Bible is new to you.

Wisdom is discussed in Proverbs, or you could read in Matthew 4 (Jesus' temptation in the Garden of Gethsemene)
