It probably doesn't have to do with how famous you are, but what position you represent in society. Usually when someone is assassinated the killer doesn't know the victim, they are lashing out at the idea or position the victim represents and may not know the individual. A minor diplomat in a 3rd world country who nobody knows could be assassinated just because they represent another country.

Being or not being famous is totally irrelevant to the issue of assassination.One needs not be famous or even known at all to be declared "assassinated"
Assassination is a term used to describe killings that either have a political or ideological motivation/root.

It's based more on the amount of power rather than how famous a person is.
Gangsters/Mobsters have people or have had people assassinated in the past.. yet to say they are not famous- they would have had power- That's one simple example.
