Although fiction, the Grapes of Wrath was an excellent book illustrating the depression.

'Grapes of Wrath'

It is a classic. You can also rent the film, it is a lot like the novel. Watch it, and read the book. It's about share croppers from Oklahoma moving west to find work. It stars Henry Fonda. This movie is everything you need to know about how the Great Depression affected the average American.

My mom lived through the depression as a kid. She said that hobo's would come around to even poor homes and ask to do work around the house for food or a little cash, whatever you could spare.
If you helped them out, they would put some paint on the sidewalk in front of your home to let other Hobo's know that you were good people who helped out.
She also used to say that people would do more to help their friends and nieghbors more than in the present day when we are not hurting. They would share coal and canned foods with people they knew had kids or were old.

Just go to the library. Also one thing that came out of the Great Depression was the rise of the democratic party. because people were broke and needed jobs. so these were the ideas of the Democratic party.

Try checking out the famous photographer Sylvia Plath. She documented the great depression well with her photographs.

I highly recomend talking to your grandparents if they are old enough, or going to a nursing home and interviewing. I learned somuch from my grandfather when I asked about it. And I saw that he still suffered from the effects of what he went through. (he'd keep food forever, he'd buy tooonns of canned food, hide things, ect.)
