80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Life is a story. Stories have to go somewhere, move somewhere (unless you're Waiting for Godot); I think our lives are the same. The more we care about living a real story and less about self-preservation (meaning a life with minimal risk), stuff (meaning that we get to spend our time looking after our stuff and then acquiring more of it), and instant gratification (Krispy Kreme), the more of an answer we find to the question.
But I don't think we enjoy thinking about the question. It's too uncomfortable, too scary. So just asking it is probably going somewhere already.

There is no meaning. There is no purpose. It just IS.
Look at all the billions of humans who have lived and died
before you.
Think of them. It is hard to imagine all the lives who have been here before us, but try.
What did life mean to them?
Was there a meaning for all of them?
Collectively?
That is what you are asking.
The answer is: Collectively - there was no meaning to the lives of all the human beings who have lived before you.
So there is no meaning of life for you either.
There is no meaning to life.
It just Is.

There isn't a universal meaning to life, it's up to you to decide what life means to you.
42 is also an acceptable answer for not only life, but the universe and everything else.

The true meaning of Life is Death, because as soon as you are born you are destined to die.
True happiness in life is coming to terms with your inevitable death. Pain and suffering occurs when you try to forget death and live as if you will go on forever.
Make death your friend, get aquainted so to speak.
