The Johnsons soaps and lotions are very very good and I think about the most used. I like the Huggies soaps as well and they have a wonderful smell to them without being overly perfumed. My daughter has very sentive skin but has never had a rash from any of their soaps. Dreft is good to wash the clothes in, All also makes a baby detergant, most stores now even have their own brands if cost is an issue.

I've always used either Johnson's Head to Toe, or the Huggies line of baby soaps.
For laundry I started out using Baby Dreft, then I switched to Baby All. Baby All works just as good, it's just as gentle, and cheaper. My son, now almost 3, was a micropreemie and I even used baby all on his clothes from the hospital and it never bothered him. I also never used dryer sheets until I began washing his clothes with everyone elses.

I had a friend going through school to be a beautician and they learned that Paul Mitchell made a baby soap that is 'tear-free' that didn't contain any additives like most other 'no more tears' baby soaps contained. Turns out, most baby soaps add a chemical much like Novocaine that actually just numbs their eyes, where as this Paul Mitchell baby shampoo just doesn't have the chemicals in it that would irritate their eyes.
As for laundry detergent, I like Dreft.

I found that dye free and fragrance free laundry detergent work better then the dreft. They are also cheaper and last longer. Dreft is the laundry detergent marketed towards newborns and babies.
As for washing the baby I really like Johnston and Johnston Shea butter wash. I think it smells the best and if your baby has eczema it really helps moisturize the skin. But I didn't start using that till my twins were about 3 or 4 months old. Before that I used just the regular baby wash from J&J. Aveno works well also but its made by J&J

My daughter is almost 2 and I have always used the Johnson and Johnson (or walmart brand) of the baby wash. If for some reason, I give her a bath in the other bathroom, I'll use our soap (safeguard).
As far as washing her clothes...they recommend that you use Dreft or something similar to make sure they have no allergies to the soap. Especially for newborns. To be completely honest, I have never used it and have always used the regular Tide, same as what I wash our clothes with. It's dye free too. My mother can use Tide and she's allergic to EVERYTHING! Especially soaps and fragrances

Johnson & Johnson head-to-toe or Baby Majic head-to-toe for bathing.
Dreft unfortunelty doesn't come in HE (High Efficiency). If you have a HE washing machine you need to use HE detergent because it uses less water and doesn't rinse the soap out well if it's not HE. So I used Tide Free and Clear HE for the first couple months.

Haha this cracked me up. Like another answer-er I was expecting to see pix of real babies vs babies made of soap and thought Id have to guess which was which!! I dont recall on soaps ANYONE going through a difficult time TTC, which I think is sad as soaps like to be realistic as poss. We defo need some more TTC story lines to make us feel better about our own travels to mummydom!! Have a great day xx

Except for the diaper area, a baby's skin really only needs to be wiped or rinsed with plain warm water.
California Baby makes nice, gentle baby washes, shampoos, and bubble baths.
I wash our clothing in a natural laundry soap, such as Seventh Generation or Bio-Kleen.

I used to wash clothes with Dreft, but the clothes never smelled clean so I switched to All Detergent. They have a special one for babies. http://all-laundry.com/products.asp
It is truly the best.. much better then Dreft. Don't waste you money on Dreft.. go for All.
The best to bathe baby in for me was Either Johnson & Johnson Baby wash or Aveeno wash for baby. Huggies baby body wash works well too.
