After extensively researching all anti-virus products I can say the best anti-virus is Kaspersky, though NOD32 is better for computer experts. Kaspersky is the best all-round anti-virus program. NOD32 runs faster and has less software conflicts but as a consequence the user interface is difficult to use.
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.
It has been proven ESET NOD32 and Kaspersky are better than the best sellers Norton and McAfee (see the consumersearch source for reviews of the top anti-virus products). NOD32 is the "Best anti-virus product of 2006" -Av Compartives.
Trend Micro Antivirus is a viable alternative if you're having a lot of trouble with software conflicts. Trend Micro rounds out the top three.
Webroot Spy Sweeper is the best, but it's not free (see the Consumer Search source for reviews of the best anti-spyware programs).

Depending on how old your computer system is, I don't mean to offend you but if AVG slowed down your computer it might be time for you to increase your RAM if your computer allows it. RAM modules have come down in price a lot in the last couple of years so it should be within your budget if your computer is upgradeable.
I just upgraded my antivirus and firewall protection to Norton Internet Security 2008 and really love it, but it is resource intensive so if AVG bogged down your system then Norton's will probably be even worse. You might try the freeware program Avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html I don't know if it will do any better on your system but you can give it a try. Sorry I can't help more.
You might consider this as a different option: Walmart sells Window's Tower systems that are pretty affordable ($298-$398) that you can use your current Monitor with so upgrading to a new system might not be as expensive as you might think. I bought my wife one of the $298 Tower Compaq's from Walmart last year and it has done a great job for her. Hope this helps.

I use AVG for viruses, and I use Spybot Search & Destroy, along with Lavasoft AdAware SE, for spyware. AVG will not slow your PC down unless it's doing a full system scan for viruses. I schedule this for 3 a.m. daily. You can do it any time that you are not working on the computer. The rest of the time it's silently and invisibly looking for inbound attacks without slowing your PC.

Norton 360 is very good. Never been a fan of the memory hogging norton antivirus' in the past, but norton 360 has a very low cpu usage, and protects and kills everything in its tracks, even tracking cookies that most av programs miss.

I usually use Norton. I bought a laptop recently and I got Norton 360 half price with it and it is the best anti virus, tune up, and backup package that I've ever had. I would recommend it. You can use it for up to 3 computers. Hope this helps

Kaspersky and NOD32 are the best.
The new version of NOD32 is good looking, efficient and faster than over products with a low RAM usage.
=]
Both must be paid for... Although I personally like to steal them off the internet. Kaspersky is easier to pirate. :]
