Mostly selfish. We tend to take care of our needs first and then whenever we reach whatever perceived comfort level we have set for ourselves then we loosen up a bit and give to others. However, even our giving to others is usually about us and feeling good about ourselves.

I would like to think that people are mostly good but it is the selfishness and/or greed that becomes most prominant in their character.

Mostly selfish, because we're conditioned at an early to age to be. This world is beginning to revolve around currency, and you're not supposed to just give all your money away. So........

selfish, when I was a kid, as I look back I can't believe how selfish I was. because of looking back and such I learn how not to be to improve myself. no child ever has to be taught to be selfish they are born that way, but they do need to learn how not to be.

what child has to be taught not to share it's toys with his sibling or friend? what child has to learn to take the biggest share of the pie or cookies? or what child has to learn to want all the attention of the adults regardless? I rest my case.

I think your confused.
being selfish is good.
if you do not take care of yourself who will?
if you do not love yourself who will?
everyone else wants you to do things for them instead of yourself.
but if you take care of everyone else,
who's taking care of you?
if you neglect yourself and get sick and die,
who's going to take care of all those other people?
your taking care of them when you take care of yourself first.
all real relationships are about reciprocation.
you do something nice for someone and they do something nice for you.
thats how the world works.
