Let's look at this realistically.
Let's say we turn in our guns...everyone. Do you honestly believe that all of the cop killers, drug dealers and all-around thugs are going to show up--maybe at a police station or wherever else is the case--and give up their guns?
Let's go a step further--REALLY further actually, but a valid point none-the-less. Do you know why the 2nd Amendment was created? It wasn't for sport hunting or gun collecting...it was for protection. Not just protection from bad people, but when it was written, the Founders of our country knew that Federal Government was to remain small and unobtrusive. If the government went beyond this, there was (and still should be) a fear that the government would seek to rule it's people, instead of just being behind the scenes like they should be. It was in case a militia needed to be established, and essentially said, "Alright government, you want to steal my sovereignty and rights? Well come and get it" Of course the aim wasn't to have a population ready at a moments notice to overthrow their own government, but it was included JUST IN CASE our government over-stepped it's bounds.
Now, look at a place like New Orleans and Katrina. The government swooped in and collected people's guns. What happened? The crime and looting that took place was unprecedented, and the government couldn't control it. People just lost family members, houses...their whole livelihood. They were upset. Unfortunately, some of those people were unable to control those emotions and took to taking advantage of the newly unprotected citizens.
This world is not a happy-go-lucky place like everyone hopes it will be. Don't get me wrong...I hope it can be a Utopian world like in the books where everyone can get along with everyone and crime, hatred and evil are non-existent. But it's not a reality. There are bad people out there...all over the world.
It's like nuclear disarmament. Some people actually believe that if we give up our nuclear weapons first, the rest of the world will follow. This is a world where the wanton destruction or property and murder of innocent people takes place everyday. A Saudi woman was just sentenced to 200 lashes in a recent trial WHEN SHE WAS THE VICTIM OF A RAPE. Do you really believe these people have a peaceful vision of the future like we do?
It's completely pie-in-the-sky mentality to think that evil will go away when we try to be the nice guys first. All it will do is make us vulnerable and spawn even more death and destruction. This world is full of evil and it will not go away by us trying to set an example.
Please understand, I don't want to see war, death and destruction. I don't think any normal person does. But what non-2nd Amendment supporters seem to miss is that people will always be evil, whether we're armed or not. I would much rather know that I'm safe, and that my peaceful neighbor is safe, and that my family is safe than have to look over my shoulder to see if someone is carrying a gun they didn't turn in. It's irresponsible and unrealistic.
You cannot control the mentality and souls of 6.5 billion people. There will ALWAYS be a bad guy.

Actually, a majority of Americans want stricter gun control.
Unfortunately, our government is owned by people who don't represent most of us. The pro-gun lobby is very strong, as are weapons-makers, who have an interest in selling lots of rapid-fire weaponry, and have a lot of money to buy our representatives.
It's true that it takes someone pulling the trigger to actually kill someone. However, when there are a lot of rapid-fire weapons, easily available to anyone, that one person who wants to kill can kill a LOT of people, very quickly.
In an on-going argument with a pro-gun friend, he said that we might as well ban baseball bats, as those can be used to kill. (We were talking about the Columbine incident, where two students kills over a dozen people.)
I said that, they would have been stopped before killing so many, had they used baseball bats.
I later realized I was wrong in this thinking. Because of the availiability of rapid-fire weaponry, they decided to "take out" all the kids who had tormented them. If those weapons hadn't been available, they would never have come up with their plan in the first place.
As I say, most Americans agree with your basic point. But our government does not work for us; they work for the people who bought and own them.

1. A gun is just an inanimate object - it can't function without a human pulling the trigger.
2. A gun doesn't just go off without help from a person.
3. Do you realize that more people would be alive to day if they did have a gun??? It is the right of a US citizen to bear arms (own guns). This is a right given to the citizens by our constitution, and will prevent our military from taking over. Notice how this nation has had NO political coups. . .

I don't know a single scenerio where a gun walked into a room by itself and killed someone.
I'll buy into your question without the real question, which seems to be your desire to illegalize guns. The problem with that is that the bad people will always find a way to get weapons, and we should be able to protect ourselves.

That's true to some extent. But America is a very violent culture. Canadians have almost as many guns per capita, but far less murders. So basically, we'll kill with a ham sandwich if we don't have guns. Just ask Janis Joplin.

Gee, I guess you missed History class where humans were killing each other for 10,000 years before the gun was invented.
I know it causes you pain, but please try to use your brain once in a while. Once you get over the pain of the first time, you'll probably start to enjoy it.
.....
To all the people that claim bullets kill people: that's just crazy. Blood loss and damaged vital organs kill people.

Guns don`t kill people, bullets do because of the gunpowder in them. Why don`t people put the blame for the excessive murder rate where it belongs, with the National Explosives Association and its fractured logic?

Guns are only the tip of the iceberg with respect to what Americans don't understand. They don't understand that a healthy population makes a healthy country. They don't understand that a society consists of more than their own self interests. Americans have emerged from their golden age into the dark ages. Their fundamentalist insanity is congruent with that which pervades the Taliban. And they have thousands of nuclear missiles.

Did anyone ever kill anyone else before they invented guns?
People kill. If guns didn't exist, they would find another weapon.
The advantage to guns is that it is an equalizer. A 100-pound woman is just as deadly as a 250-pound criminal with a gun.
But if the criminal came after her with a knife or a bat, and all she had was a knife or bat to defend herself, she wouldn't stand a chance.
