and they do not teach it. I believe that it is something to do with Health & Safety problems. How then can the government complain about too many children being killed on the road, when they do not teach them road safety?

Road safety should be taught by both parent and school.

I know that my school taught bus safety.

Hi, I am a primary teacher at a school in Cheshire. Cheshire has a road safety team who ask for two pupils to be nominated from each school (usually year 6 children) to be road safety officers for their school. They organise competitions, assemblies etc. to draw the children's attention to road safety issues. Also, teachers can go on a 'Let's Bike' course which is similar to the old Cycling Proficiency course, and learn how to teach children to ride their bikes safely on public roads. This is voluntary but in lots of schools the year 6 children do get the opportunity to participate in this.
I do think you have a good point though. There's not much point being really good at literacy and numeray if you get run over by a bus.

Many primary schools teach basic road safety as they take children out to study the local environment or on educational visits further afield. Many schools still run the cycling classes, but it is often difficult to find a safe area in which to do the classes. As for specific lessons on the Highway Code, most of it is aimed at adults and so is inappropriate for young children. Of course, there is also the problem of an over-crowded curriculum, there just isn't lesson time available.
