Jaimey and Mike went out to the fields to pick apples in an apple grove. They picked up 638 apples in 4 days all together out of the 11,700 there. What is the percentage that Jaimey and Mike have taken up for picking the apples? How long will it take them until they pick them all?

I DON'T GET IT. Jaimey and Mike CAN'T pick up that many in even a week! What is wrong with them?! lol! My friend and I are completely clueless, so if you can help... please do!

Thank you!,
Mairy

PROBLEM 1:

In four days they have picked 638

As a percentage of the whole this is:
638
--------- x 100 = 5.453%
11700

PROBLEM 2:

They have 11,700 apples, and they pick 638 in 4 days.

.. 4 days ............... x days
---------------- = -------------------
638 apples ... 11700 apples

4 * 11700 = 638 x
46800 = 638 x
x = 46800 / 638 = 73.354

So a little more than 73 days

Percentage that J and M picked in 4 days = 638/11700*100% = 5.45%

Assuming they pick the rest of the apples at the same rate it will take them: 4 days = 5.45 % 100% = x days : set up a linear proportion x = 4/0.0545 = 73.4 days

divide 638/11700 to get the percentage of taken apples and multiply it by 100 then you will get 5.45%. to find the days it will took: 638/4=11700/x, to do this multiply 11700 by 4 then divide it by 638, it is about 73 days.
I hope it help you!

Percentage of apples picked up is 638/11700 = 5.45%

It would take them 73.35 days to pick them all up

638 / 4 = 11700 / x
x= 73.35

They probably have a very efficient apple-picking system.

Anyway 638/11700 = approx. 5.5%

For "how long", make a proportion:

638/4 = 11700/x

638 x = 46800

x = approx. 73 days to pick them all!

638 is to 11700 as x is to 100. divide 638 by 117 giving you 5.45% around...

They could easily pick that many in a day.

You need to find how many apples a day they can pick: 638/4days = 159.5

and then divide that by the total 11700/159.5 = 73.25 days it would take to pick them all
