And a contributor here who posts teriffic Q&As is a (OMG!) SAHM and home maker!

Do you think that people who are not the feminist stereotype are very shocking to many average people?

And is it a negative or positive effect for feminism in general?

I think they do indeed shock others who have a certain mindset of what a feminist is or isn't. Feminism is about choices. I love girlie, pink, frilly, totally unsensible items as well and YES I am and have been a feminist for about gasp!
40 years.

A feminist is just anyone that believes in equality btw the sexes and feel that it has yet to be achieved, it has nothing to do with being a tomboy or a girlie girl. I believe that feminist has taken on a negative persona as being an in your face rebellious women (sometimes people picture a vocal lesbian when they hear the term). Its just not so! My father is a feminist and he chooses to help girls have the same opportunities in sports as a child as the boys. Asking if feminism is negative or positive is to me like asking if civil rights is good or bad. Research has shown that the societies that women have more rights are the socities that thrive the most, and thats a big way the west has separated itself. Women who live in countries where they have rights get a better education (able to help educate children), have economic indepence bc many have jobs, and have less children. In countries that dont give women many rights the women often do not work (stay at home to take care of family) which drastically hurts the economy bc it kills half of the work force, they have more children (contraceptive are not available and it is seen as their job), and are completely dependent on their husbands bc they have no independent income (leads to abuse of women).

I'm not shocked by you at all. My mother's a very girlie and domestic feminist. It's more common than people think.

A feminist is allowed to like girly things; a homemaker is perfectly capable of asking good questions. But, yes, it is somewhat unusual to see a homemaker call herself a feminist, since second-wave feminism has been based on ensuring that women can be something other than that.

I think MOST of us don't fit the "stereotype," but that's the problem with stereotypes...they objectify people, and reduces them to the overly-simplistic.

How one wants to look on the outside, and feel on the inside are separate things. I wear dresses all the time. I think they're more comfortable, and yes, they make me look pretty.

Express yourself!

How you dress isn't the problem.

The hypocrisy of your ideology is. (e.g. feminist organizations are the ones who put the laws on the books that are not-equal in divorce/child custody hearings.)

Dress as nice as you want. It doesn't really matter.
