I am about 5 1/2 months pregnant with twins and we are considering cloth diapers or a diaper service in place of the disposable ones. Has anyone tried a diaper service or cloth diapers? What are your thoughts?

I use them on both of my sons(2 1/2 years and 11 months) and I love them!!! I have a little bit of each system; prefolds, fitteds, covers, wool, pockets, All in Twos, and All in Ones. I think they all have pros and cons, but the advantages FAR outweigh using disposable(IMHO). I would recommend looking into purchasing at least one of each system, to see what works best for you and your babies.

People here are going to give you crappy answers, but they will be the ones that think it is "gross". It is extremely easy, and not messy at all....at least no more than the blowouts that I've had to deal with using disposables. I have NEVER had an explosion that cloth couldn't contain.

My close friend uses cloth diapers on her son. She uses the ones with the pockets, and I saw her change him and it was so easy! Realize that today's cloth diapers are not like they used to be. They resemble disposables and are very easy to use. If I had my own washer and dryer, I'd use them for my son. I estimated the costs and realized that washing and drying cloth diapers a few times a week (added with our usual load) would not be cost efficient at all.
However, research all the cloth diapers available. There are many different types (AIO, prefolds, pockets, etc). You might invest in a sampler pack that will contain several different types from several different companies. There are also diaper swapper sites online, where you can trade with mothers (if you don't mind getting used ones --it really isn't a sanitary issue if they're properly cleaned!)
We don't have a diaper service in our area so I can't comment on that.

I used cloth diapers with my daughter. I couldn't stand the thought of chemical-laden disposables against her skin 24x7 for the first 2-3 years of her life. You might need to experiment a bit to find the ones that work best for you. I liked Mother-ease diapers, with Stacinator wool covers. When we traveled, I used natural disposables.

My son was allergic to all "Pamper" type diapers. The first month, I had diaper service. Was glad to get feeling better so I could do my own. They do get a bit expensive. He had a real sensitive bottom (and top).lol I just made sure he had plenty of cloth diapers and I changed him every time he did anything in his pants. He never even sat with a wet diaper. His skin was to sensitive to take a chance, Besides, I would not have wanted to wear one, why should he?By the time he was walking he wanted to go to his pot. I just showed it to him and let him set on it. He told me when he was ready to use it.Cloth diapers are a bit of work but It was much better I think.Just make sure you get them washed and rinsed really good. I washed in really hot water twice, and I rinsed them in warm water, twice. I used one of the old fashioned "wringer" washers. It was a trip!!

Cloth diapers are awesome!
I decided to use them when my son turned one.
The experience has been great thus far and I look forward to putting my next child in them from birth.

I would not recommend using a service unless you don't have a washer and dryer.

i use them, they are great and have come along way, they are easy to use, go to e bay and go to cloth diapers and just check them out you will be pleasantly surprised also you can e mail the moms who are selling them for care instructions and to answer any questions you may have, look for them in bundles do not buy individually, it has saved me a lot of money, and my children all potty trained by 18 months

It will save you money but I find it to be so dirty and such a hassle!
