that is not rebooting, rebooting is turning off the computer and restarting it. You are talking about reformatting but, I think if you hold Ctrl+ F11 (continuously tap the F11 key) that should do it. I was thinking that with xp you can go through the start menu (and do a system restore) but, I'm not completely sure on that. If the Ctrl+F11 doesn't work I think the 3rd key is Alt

You want to do a restore, not a reboot--- rebooting just means turn the power off and back on again. When you restart the computer, before you see the Windows sign, press F11 over and over again. You should get the "Advanced Startup Options" menu. From there select "Safe mode/System Restore" (the menu might be a little different depending on the computer model) and you can use the System Restore tool to roll back all your changes by selecting the earliest restore date available on the calendar in the tool.

I have never heard of Dell systems doing this without the restore disk. If your system is not too old you can call Dell and give them the serial number and they could probably supply you with the restore disk. If not, you would have to get a copy of XP and do a new install which isn't a bad idea if your system is running crappy.
P.S. Stay away from the "Rape Squad". All they do is screw.

Are you absolutley particular this isn't any longer a pandemic! merely through fact your virus scanner says there's no longer something there does not recommend there's no longer... anti-viruses do no longer %. all viruses. while your laptop starts up this is going to maximum probable say "You laptop has recovered from a severe blunders." and ask you to deliver an blunders record. deliver the record and see if there's a reaction. in case you won't have the capacity to discern it out and don't desire to take it to a working laptop or laptop shop, the 1st element i could do could be to determine the followers interior are working at a minimum of 1500RPM, any much less and there will be warmth buildup, which motives intermittent restarts. If the followers have bogged down too plenty, get new followers and a clean CPU through fact as quickly as a CPU is warmth broken, this is crammed for good. (via CPU I recommend the chip interior.) you may frequently verify the fan speeds via urgent DEL back and back from the 2d your laptop starts buzzing once you change it on... this could take you into the BIOS setup. (If DEL doesnt artwork, attempt F2 or F10) attempt changing the RAM, and then attempt the flexibility furnish.

I thought all computers were the same.you can keep pushing the start button on your tower until it comes up in "safe mode" then proceed like nothing happened. Sorry if this doesn't answer your question- but it happens here about once a month when I do too much and it is out of control. Good luck.
What specifically also was it doing what is the problem?

Generally when you have "recovery" options you have software installed on your system that will walk you through the process. Look in your program files for system recovery or something along those lines and run the Dell program for your laptop. One indicator that you have back up recovery software on your system is the presence of another partition, like a "D" drive. That may have an icon for you to click as well.

What the geek squad guy told you is to force your computer to start in the safe mode.
Press F11 or F12 at the time of boot when windows start loading , after the bios checks are gone through.
If you can start your conmputer in safe mode only fi your still have HDD accessible and able to read from it.
If you HDD is failed , there is no way you cna boot your computer wihout boot disk.

Go to the 'restore' menu in the help section. That does only work with Windows XP.
The boiler plate above is mostly useless for this specific question.
