what role dose the archive bit and number of tapes play in various backups?

The archive bit only plays a roll if you aren't doing full backups. If you are doing a differential back up, the archive bit is set everytime the data changes. Differential backups will only back up the data if the archive bit is set to true or 1 (same thing).

The archive bit is only an indicator that the file has been backed up. The number of tapes you use/need is going to be determined by what backup system you use. Incremental, Differential or Full and of course the amount of data you are backing up.
