Technically, there are only 46 states in the USA.

Here's why....

Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Massechusetts are all officially "Commonwealths". This grants them no special constitutional powers. They simply chose this word to describe themselves at the end of the War of Independance. It made it clear that they were no longer "royal colonies" answering to the King, but states governed by the "common consent of the people".
There are also two American Commonwealths overseas - Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands. Neither of these is a state, either.

Hah, the concept of 52 "states" is much older than Iraq, nice try.

the other two possible or potential states are, in theory, Puerto Rico and Washington DC. DC has electoral votes (3), and Puerto Rico has been a commonwealth for some time.

50 States, NOT 52.

At the last count there were only 50 [fifty] states in the Union. The last to sign up being Hawaii - which incidentally retains the old British Colonial Flag as it's flag of state. Thus there is at least one part of America which remains civilized and enjoys the glory of the Union Flag.

Some have suggested that UK is the 51st State.

Nikita Krushchev had the best idea when he described UK as an American Aircraft carrier.

Just about sums up the situation really.

There are only 50 States, as several other responders have pointed out. Canada and Mexico are separate countries that border the USA. Canada is a Dominion, with its own Parliament but with Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State.
Mexico is a republic.

There are several territories of the Unites States such as Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam and Samoa which could become States but probably won't

(Under its present status, Puerto Rico does not pay federal income taxes but gets a lot of welfare and other payments from the Federal government. As a State they would be much worse off fiscally.)

There are only 50 American states. Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and Samoa are U.S. territories, not states. Technically, they COULD become states someday, since all but the original 13 colonies, and Texas were territories before they became states (Texas was a Mexican Territory that became an independent republic for nearly a decade before it was annexed by the U.S.) However 50 is a nice round number, and I don't forsee Americans adding to the club any time soon.

There are only 50, (Puerto Rico and Iraq are NOT U.S. states Han-Han). Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the U.S., not to be confused with the 4 U.S. commonwealths-Kentucky, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, which are called that because their governments are based on the common consensus of the people.

Also, Mexico and Canada have nothing to do with the U.S. other than that they share a continent. They are their own countries.

That being said, Google is a goldmine of information. It would have been a lot easier to look it up there than to go through all of the B.S. here.
