Line your equations up so like terms are in the same column:

PROBLEM 1:

9x² ........ - 3
7x² + 6x ............ (subtract)
-----------------
2x² - 6x - 3 <--- ANSWER

Notes:
9x² - 7x² = (9-7)x² = 2x²
0x - 6x = (0 - 6)x = -6x
-3 - 0 = -3

PROBLEM 2:

5x² + 2x - 4
..x² - 2x - 3
2x² - 4x - 3 ............ (add)
-----------------
8x² - 4x - 10 <--- ANSWER

Notes:
5x²+x²+2x² = (5+1+2)x² = 8x²
2x + (-2x) + (-4x) = (2 + -2 + -4)x = (-4)x
-4 + -3 + -3 = -10
