It helps to moderate the air temperature. Warm air coming of the water and hitting a cold land mass might also produce fog.

It could also effect precipitation and storm patterns. Cold fronts when mixed with warm fronts usually produce unstable weather patterns (storms). Depending on how long and how warm it could effect some fish migration patterns as well.
