Depending on where you live, there are different regulations on when a child can change to a forward facing seat.
In Canada, a child must be at least 22lbs AND 1 year old before forward facing.
In the US, a child must be at least 20lbs AND 1 year old before forward facing.
I believe in the UK it goes by weight, and when your child outgrows the infant seat, and does not have an age component.
The convertible seats rear face to usually about 30 - 35 lbs and then can be turned to forward facing until 40 lbs, sometimes higher. Children can usually use a convertible seat until they are ready for a booster seat.
Convertible seats don't use the same base system like infant seats. They will stay in the car and everything needed to install it in your car will come with it.

The do have a Graco Safeseat 2, but I would not recommend this seat. The reason is because this seat only holds your baby until 40 pounds. They sell car seats out there that can hold your child for a lot longer in a five point harness. Britax, Safety First Apex 65 and Sunshine Kids sell car seats that can hold your child longer. It is very important to hold your child in a five point harness as long as possible. This website can explain it better then I can: www.kyledavidmiller.org. If you buy a Sunshine Kids Car Seat this website all the money from the car seat goes to buy a car seat for kids who do not have the money to get a good seat.

There is no other car seat that will fit your base unless it is another graco infant carrier which will not work for your son. You need to buy a carseat for him, you can still keep it rear facing. *and should until he is at least 20lbs or as long as you can. I read about how much safer it is for the babies to stay rear facing with the video to prove it. There are many different types of car seats it just depends on what brand you want and how much you want to spend. I bought my daughter the Graco comfort sport car seat. It is very soft and comfortable. It also got really good ratings by consumers. The price is also great it goes for about 70.00 depending on where you buy it from.

• Infants should be in a rear facing infant only seat or convertible seat until they are 1 year old and 20 pounds. Children who reach 20 pounds before their first birthday still need to face backwards, and can be moved into a rear facing convertible seat.
• After they are 20 pounds and have passed their first birthday, toddlers can use a forward facing car seat (or a forward facing combination seat) until they are about 40 pounds or their ears have reached the top of the car seat.

No, no, no. Once he's too big for the carrier, that's it. Take the base out of the car and save it and the carrier for your next child. You need to get a rear/forward facing convertible Graco car seat. (or any other brand) He should be rear facing until he is 1 year old.

He needs to be rearfacing until at least 1 year AND 20lbs.
The SafeSeat 2 will NOT fit into the base for the SafeSeat 1 - it is a different kind of seat that only forward faces.
You need a convertible carseat (go for higher weight limit seat that harnesses to 55-65lbs). We have 2 Britax Marathons that are excellent!
The recommendation from safety experts and the American Academy of Pediatrics is to rearface (RF) to the limits of the seat which is 30-35lbs on all seats sold in the US. My own daughter is rode RF until she reached 33 lbs which is the weight limit on her Britax Marathons. I wish she could still be RF, she was so much safer.
I have included several links with great pictures and videos of what happens to childrens necks when they are FF in a crash.
Most people are concerned about their child's legs being scrunched or broken in a crash. There is absolutely no evidence that shows a child's legs are in danger and I would much rather deal with a broken leg, than a broken neck.

He needs a convertible car seat, it will face rear until he's a year, and then turn around when he's older- and it will eventually be a booster seat when he's done with the five point harness.
He's still too young to face forward.
