I'll be the first to admit that the wellfare system is not perfect. There are people who will take advantage of it and that is a complete shame. The problem is that you don't want people who really do need it to fall through the cracks and there is no way to define it in such a way that would both help the people who legitimately need it and restrict those who honestly simply need a check or two in transition but innevitably get lazy and unnecessarily dependent on it. The only solution is spending even more money to audit the system more closely (and it would have to be regularly) and I don't think anyone wants to spend that kind of money on a system that polices a system that people already complain about. That's the rub, and no one wants to give long term support to those who are able bodied and able minded and have no good reason not to be able to hold down a job, but where and how do you draw the line to exclude those who honestly need the help, but stop the ones who don't without making it even more expensive in the end? As much as it is unfortunate I would rather support some deadbeats than cut off people who the system is built for.

Your name cuts off, but Tigerian... I agree with the end of your statement about meeting somewhere in the middle and learning from each other, but you started off by painting democrats as socialists which is inaccurate, and completely defeating to your point. There are a lot of fallacies that are being thrown around as fact with the right/left divide being so polarized at this point in time. Just like most republicans are neither ignorant, heartless or greedy most democrats aren't socialist, tree hugging, weaklings. I work hard too and I think it's fair that I am better off than some of the people that I know, I've earned that, but I see people struggling without a feasible solution (for many different reasons) and I think we should help them. What's so wrong with that?

Not greedy, self-centered. Democrats believe that everyone in America should be equal. If they had their way, there would be no poor people and no rich people. Everyone would be on an even playing field. This ideology has errors. One would be the lack of incentive to work hard equating to slower progress.
Republicans believe that if you work hard, you should get rewarded and that you should be able to choose where your money goes without expenditures being dictated to you. This ideology also has errors. Mainly how do you deal with people who are working hard but are getting nowhere because of their social environment? It is important to understand opposing viewpoints rather than shoot them down. We can all learn from each and develop a system that makes sense!
Now you know and knowing is half the battle. GO JOE!! hehe

As far as Republicans go they believe in the Businesses making more money. Democrats believe in taking care of those who make you that money. Businessmen have been crying since the start of this country about how much money they are losing because they actually have to pay their work. If they could get slavery back they would.
The biggest hit to Republicans is the name Bush from the state Texas , who kiss the worlds biggest and greediest industries butts, the oil companies.
Just pray another Bush doesnt run or someone from Texass altogether.
Ever notice life is good with the Democrats in office? Oh unless you are greedy businessman of course.

Because they are. This country was founded by our fore-fathers who said. For the people and by the people. Just so you know most of our founding fathers were poor.Republicans are for the rich and screw the poor. They need to realize that poor and middle class keep this country rolling.
What do you think would happen if all of the middle class and poor people just got up 1 day and said I have had it.No more buying anything.
They would lose there wealth. Then what would they do.Nothing

Most of your answers here stem on the fact that we need another American Revolution to clean things up. I totally agree. There are no Dr. Russell Kirk type of beliefs anymore and so THIS IS WHAT we have painted ourselves into a corner about. Dr. Russel Kirk once stated . . . "Resolved that all of the intricate fabric of the civil social order, woven by the spirit of religion, and the spirit of a gentleman, shall not be destroyed by the appetites of our present unruly generation." And Dr. Kirk was right . . . Now, we are in trouble . . . Unfortunately. Killing 4-5 million Americans over a period of approximately 5 to 6 years may be the ONLY solution to this problem that we ourselves have chosen to manifest into . . . All because of the stupid, liberal, give-away this and give-away that programs! Now, another Revolution is really the ONLY solution left . . . I don't mind telling you . . . It's going to be NO Boston Tea Party!!! That's for sure!! . . . Just watch us!!! . . .

Maybe you specifically don't, but the Republican party generally falls down here.
For instance, one (of the many) reasons that FEMA fell down during Katrina was that it had been gutted by Republicans, ostensibly to save on taxes. Excellent decision.
Furthermore, most Democrats (including me) would resent the idea that we simply look to the government for freebies. We recognize that neither pure socialism nor pure capitalism work and we try to find a viable mid-point.
However, capitalism is too cruel - Why should we give our vets benefits? We paid them for their time overseas, right? Take the Republican view point to its logical extreme and there you are.
I'm guessing that YOU would find that apalling.
And Socialism does not motivate, so the country quickly disintigrates into a have-and-have-nots power structure ... Stalinism.
Most Republicans and Most Democrats do what they do with a pure heart.
It debases the debate to assume otherwise.

I don't mind my tax dollars being used to help the needy, but I do have a problem with those who abuse the system. Maybe that needs to be clarified to Democrats who think that way about so-called "greedy" Republicans.

its not just the fact they they refust to help those who "refuse" to work...its that they look at society as a business...and it can't be sucessfully run that way. Republicans have RUN OUR CONTRY INTO THE GROUND...I mean, look around right now. It was a republican that repealed the federal law to keep vehicle emissions standards high, it has been a number of republicans voting to utilize our forest lands for commercial interests, not to create a national health care system, not to make education universal...to keep the working class working and make the rich richer...sorry, thats why democrats (and liberals, independents and socialists) think that republicans are greedy and mean. Actions speak louder than words

A refusal indicates they are very stubbornly refusing to help because they have no generosity, compassion, understanding for anyone or anything other than themselves. Realizing that they DO NOT make up a majority of this population would be a great start. Expanding their closed set minds would be another. We really have no room in this world or this nation for selfish, bigoted, self-righteous morons thinking their way is the only way...when case in point we have let republicans run our nation for the last eight years and we are in turmoil!!
