Generally I agree with TruthSeeker. *I* would be getting our troops out, because our presence there is, and always has been immoral.
But you're asking about the Democrats' motives, not mine. And from what I've seen, many Democrats are thinking about the next election, and trying to plot a middle course. They know that most citizens want the war to end. But they don't want to be accused of "not supporting the troops," however silly that accusation may sound. Also, most of them voted for the war initially, and some worry that, if they reverse their stance now, they will be seen as "flip-floppers," etc.
In a way, they're right to be concerned, because mud does get slung in campaigns. But the dems are now seen as devoid of principles, and that's bound to hurt them in the long run.

and now for political purpose they want to deny funds to the troops to appease Moveon.org. Also as the AP notes.. Sec. Gates has put out.
"As a result, he said, he is faced with the undesirable task of preparing to cease operations at Army bases by mid-February, and lay off about 100,000 defense department employees and an equal number of civilian contractors. A month later, he said, similar moves would have to be made by the Marines. "
But then Palosi and Reid can add 8000 ear marks in thier defense bill with 20 Billion in pork.....

Success would imply that there is some positive long term transition going on in Iraq. However we have been told that, for all the good work and deaths of our soldiers, the country is still on the road to sectarian ethnic cleansing and their government is inept and laden with graft. Please tell me that our efforts, treasury and young lives have not been wasted. Please tell me that when we leave, another Saddam will not be the one to bring security and stability to Iraq.

I think it's just because they want to be contrary. It is an election year and every voter dissatisfied with the other side is a vote in the ballot box for them.
