“ The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration. "

This is the 16th Amendment and it makes the Income Tax very legal. If you dig through the huge amount of paperwork that is the Internal Revenue Code you will see that you are not required to file for income taxes. You can request that the government estimate or calculate your taxes for you. But you are required to pay your taxes every year. Just ask Willie Nelson, Wesley Snipes, and that fat guy from Survivor. Don't get taken in by this internet scam!

Check out Title 26 of the United States Code. Specifically 26 U.S.C. Sec. 1 and a few others. We are, in fact, required to pay federal income tax. . .by law. Look up the laws and stop listening to what people are telling you.

Did you know you are wrong? You probably don't and are only looking for someone to reinforce your delusions.

Anyway, there is a law that requires payment of income taxes and filing returns. The internal revenue laws passed by Congress are codified in Title 26 U.S.C. You can read it at http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode26/usc_sup_01_26.html

The sections that apply to most people are:
§ 1 - Tax imposed
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00000001----000-.html
§ 61 - Gross income defined
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00000061----000-.html
§ 62 - Adjusted gross income defined
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00000062----000-.html§ 63 - Taxable income defined
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00000063----000-.html
§ 3402 - Income tax collected at source
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00003402----000-.html§ 6011 - General requirement of return, statement, or list
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode26/usc_sec_26_00006011----000-.html

Title 26 is valid and arguments to the contrary are without merit.

You can read the actual tax laws passed by Congress in the U.S. Statutes at Large. You can find the U.S. Statutes at Large in Federal Depository Libraries. You can locate one in your state at http://www.gpoaccess.gov/libraries.html

BTW, "Freedom to Fascism", "Zeitgeist", "The Money Masters" and other movies on YouTube or other places on the Internet are full of inaccuracies and misconceptions. I could fill all of the space allowed here refuting the inaccuracies in the first ten minutes of "Freedom to Fascism" and that movie is almost two hours long.

EDIT: The Constitution states that Congress has the power to levy and collect taxes (Article 1, Section 8). It also states that direct taxes must be apportioned (Article 1, Section 9), but what people don't realize is that income taxes are considered INDIRECT in a Constitutional sense. However, that argument is irrelevant because the 16th amendment states "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration." Simply stated, even if income taxes are considered direct taxes, they don't have to be apportioned.

Before you bring it up, the 16th amendment was properly ratified and arguments to the contrary are again without merit.

You go ahead and abstain from paying them and let the rest of us know how things turned out. I've heard of several wise guys who said the same thing and either served jail terms, paid ridiculous fines, or both.
TO BEN C: How are we going to support all the pork projects that congress keeps attaching to funding bills without taxes?

You won't find many who agree with you, as they are all in jail. This is a fallacy which has been perpetrated for years, and the poor people who went along have ended up having their property confiscated and being sent to prison. Hope you like it there.

i believe you are right. there is no law that you have to file. however.........a friend of mine heard of this from a lawyer. the friend and many others subscribed to this position and quit filing/paying taxes. when the i.r.s went after the scofflaws the lawyer left the country. the friend says that he hasn't been seen or heard of since. however........the friend has paid back in taxes and penalties, over $90,000 !!!! thats in something like 4yrs. myself? i'll continue filing/paying on time. would love to see the clowns in washington go to a flat rate tax system.

I'm sure you have a point, but why is it that if you don't pay your taxes, you go to jail? or they take it directly from your bank acct. or paycheck? How can they do this?
