Looks like they've closed. This article dated February 21, 2000 talked about Avenues Mall and its tenants, "In addition, the Pacific Sunwear store on the lower level is moving into the old J. Riggins store on the upper level to make room for Chico's..."

But a GUILDFORD COUNTY PUBLIC RECORDS notice (copyright 2001) showed a J. Riggins Store at 146 Four Seasons obtained a permit for interior alterations. So maybe they moved there?

They all went out of business in the very late 90 s. Edison Brothers the parent company filed Chapter 11 twice (97 & 99) and could not make it out of it. They were never owned by Chest King, (really Chess King). It is a shame it was a great store and a pretty good company to work for. I actually still have a few things from there that have worn really well.

J. Riggings closed it's operations around the mid 1980's. It was purchased by the out fitter known as "Chest King" for which it's clothing quality diminished shortly after.
Chest King was a "Punk Rock/Demin" type operation for which it's buyer's were not geared to selecting the contemporary fashion for Men. J. Rigging's was targeting , thus decline of quality, selection of buyers desire and other things.
J. Riggings' was under U.S. Specialty Retailing, who also held such brands Women's clothing such as August MAX and Casual Corner {remember them?}. I was the Midwest Store Expansion Supervisor that flew around and prepared the Grand Openings of 36 stores throughout Illinois, Minneapolis, Washington D.C., Indiana and some other states, during the popularity of building Malls to create suburban living about {and exodus of city living}, and when mall shopping popularity grew and Downtown's of cities were becoming desolate.
I was recruited out of retail and J.Riggings, several years before Chest King took over.
