The other answers are not quite right. Actually, they are wrong.
From 1653 to 1658, England was a republic and had a head-of-state with the title Lord Protector - a sort of elected President. He was Oliver Cromwell, one of the greatest Englishmen ever to have lived. He believed in religious freedom and invited various persecuted groups to come to England, to set up businesses, and establish active communities in our major cities - provided they amalgamated into the English way of life..

There has not been a female in such a role because the head-of-state since 1660 has been an hereditary monarch from one of the rich, privileged families of Britain or Europe. Since 1689, the monarch has been free from politics in the sense that he or she has not been permitted to address matters of political opinion and not intervened in policy connected to social legislation, economics and finance, or international relations.

The nearest we ever get to a president is the prime minister who is elected or re-elected every five years or so. As other anwers have said, the only female prime minister was Margaret Thatcher. She was disliked by certain groups in British society because she broke down age-old practices in industry that damaged the economy, removed excessive power from trade unions, controlled the incursions of European burocracy, and established the rule of law. She kept herself separate from the corruption and personal aggrandisment of later and recent politicians in Britain.

Anyway, those days are gone. We're back to a bunch of men, mostly Scottish, who seem to think that political offices exist for their own purposes and the future wealth of their families.

Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy, NOT a republic.
So there have never been presidents of either sex. Victor is wrong when he says that England was a republic under Cromwell. It wasn't. It was a Commonwealth which is not the same concept.

Margaret Thatcher was the first (and, so far, the only) female Prime Minister of Great Britain. As a US citizen I wish we had a woman of her calibre running for President instead of (barf) Hillary Clinton.

We havent got presidents, man. The first prime minister was M H Thatcher, and so far she is the only one.
After 10, 11 years she got booted out because of the poll tax, which was as questionable as everything she did. Perhaps the next person will last longer.

There never was one or a male President come to that. The UK had "Kings" for each particular area during the reign of the Anglo-saxons. It was during the reign of the Normans that The UK had one monarch. This has continued down to the present day. We have had a female Prime Minister - Margaret Thatcher, who infamously said that "there would never be a female Prime Minister in her life-time"!

UK has HM Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. UK is a Constitutional Monarchy - no presidents.

Our first ever woman Prime Minister was Margaret Thatcher.

Love her or hate her, she changed Britain from a depressed near-Commie state into what it became today. A land of missed opportunity, self indulgence and greed, wherein the inmates of the asylum have taken over.

Otherwise life's not too bad, once you get over the fact that the Bank of England has been busy spending our money bolstering up a failed bank called Northern Rock. I'm not sure of the exact cost but one nearly sober MP in the Commons said he thought it was twice the annual cost of Primary Education here in UK.

Mind Boggling place UK - please do pay a visit and bring a rain-coat and umbrella.
