Assuming he was deployed to a war zone or certain other locations in direct support of the war effort there is no need to apply for an extension. He has an automatic extension of 6 months from his return date to file all missing returns and pay any tax that came due while he was deployed. If you're filing a joint return that includes you. You should mark the top of your return with the name of the operation he was supporting and the deployment dates. If the IRS questions it, a copy of his deployment orders will suffice for proof.

There should be no need to wait for anything on property taxes paid in 2006. The tax collector's office can tell you how much was paid during 2006 if you need that to file your 2006 return.

If you need assistance in preparing your tax returns, the JAG office on post can assist with that. Also, his unit probalby has a trained Unit Tax Advisor who is ready to assist. I did that duty for most of my 21+ years of active duty. There's really no need to mess with the storefront tax prep mills; there's plenty of help through the military on post. And it won't cost you a dime!

whether you're due a reimbursement, in case you filed an extension request, you have one extra 6 months to declare any further refund! to illustrate, for tax twelve months 2007 the submitting last date became into April 15, 2008. the traditional last date for claiming any refunds might consequently be April 15, 2011. besides the shown fact that in case you filed an extension request on form 4868 previous to April 15, 2008, the prolonged last date for claiming refunds may well be October 15, 2011. Tax tip: continuously document a form 4868 request in the past the submitting last date. You never understand while it ought to help you!

a. If you are entitled to a refund, there is no penalty.

b. You can file the return without the "house taxes" and then amend it later when you receive the "house taxes".
