I believe there was research done into this, and the consensus was that kids are actually socializing even more than previous generations. They are just doing it in a different format, with different rules.
While it might seem to older generations that they are losing social skills, eventually their social skills will be the only ones, and thus, the imbalance will have righted itself. There was this same imbalance when the telephone replaced letter writing.
I still despair about it, though.

Absolutely! Kids would rather IM than actually get together. Or if they do get together they are all taking pictures of each other and emailing them around.
I saw a group of middle school aged girls at a burger place the other day - all four were on their own phones talking to OTHER people or texting. Not a word was being said between them to each other.

Yes. I think so. If kids aren't pulled away from over using technology they will become anti-social. It's a great improvement in humanity but as with everything it can be abused.

Good question. I don't think it's just children, though, as many adults opt to socialize via email/IM/etc as well, at the same time neglecting to get to know their own neighbors on their street, etc.
It's not just social skills either... I know with myself, I neglect important things like exercise because things like Y!A are just so danged addicting.

no. actually IM, text, and email are helping our kids with social skills. They also learn lots of things. Their teachers can talk to them about homework or whatever. They make lots of friends, and they can learn from each other how to be successful at something.

I agree. Not only that, but how many people do you see that are unapproachable because they have buds in their ears? Not to mention 'netspeak' abbreviations! Definitely not a way to enhance grammar and written skills.

I think this is sort of true but not for everyone there are lots of kids that can communicate well like in school and write good essays.

I think that kids are being taught to get to the point. Not like back in the day when people just danced around everything.

I think by Jim B's response the answer is clear -- I bet he's under 21.
And yes, I know what you mean -- it's pretty scary!

IDK.......omg!
(just kidding)
It's bizarre, to say the least. I'm a mean mother because I actually make my kids write letters to their grandmothers.....on paper.....with a pen/pencil......address the envelope.....AND make them take it out to the mailbox!
Our social gathering rule: no electronic devices!
