The first war was when Thag tried to abscond with Urg's woman. Urg started throwing rocks at Thag, and the rest is history.

Wars exist for the same reason crime exists. Someone is always out to take advantage of someone else. As for when the first one was, your guess is as good as mine. It's lost behind the dark curtain of pre-history. Nevertheless, it was most likely a tribal war over land (for grazing animals, since this would have happened long before agriculture).

A war is a large scale violent conflict between two sovereign nations or states (bodies of government). The first war was probably before history. The oldest one I can find anything about was the conquests of Sumar against neighboring states in modern day Iraq (Tigris and Euphrates river valley) around 2500 BC.

The first wars were over resources...one group wanted to hunt an area another used, and decided it was better not to share.
When people began to farm, the farmers outnumbered the hunters, and took their land for farming...when nomads from a wide spread area decided they wanted what the farmers had, then took what they wanted by force...
Later, wars were for other reasons- religion, politics, etc.

War exists because humans are violent creatures and killing is a part of our nature, We have most likely been killing each other, and family groups or larger loosely related groups have fought each other since they found out if they killed the other people they could have their land/food/resources.

War exists because of conflict and ideologies. Countries fight over borders, money, trade, etc....
Civilizations have been fighting for eons. The first war could have been over territory, food, anything really.

war has always been about resource acquistion and control. resources such as food, materials, people animals.
war has always been about dominating over others owning others whether to kill them off because they are a threat to the warriors agendas, or because they couldn't trust them to stay subserviant or because they were sick and couldnt work the plantations or gaining slaves aka free labor. there have always been people who want to own others, get something for nothing, plunder steal and control and basically be creepy bossy people.
