Right now I am a psychology major, but I have always wanted to get into acting. My advisor at school told me to wait until my senior year to take any acting classes so that I can meet my graduation requirements and all, but I want to take the class as soon as possible. In high school I was on the forensics team in Duo Interp, Dramatic Interp, and prose and poetry, plus was in high school musicals. Should I take my advisors advice and wait to take the classes, or should I do what I want and take one next semester?

Miss Moll couldn't be more wrong. Professional casting directors do not care if or where you went to college, they only care if you fit the part and can act it. Why would your advisor give such advice? If you want to act, you had better get into some plays. For more info read my profile and write to me at my aol address.

I think it's interesting that you're a psych major and have the avatar you have... interesting, very interesting.... haha

I think your advisor is speaking from a strictly academic standpoint while you have creative needs and your schedule is not meeting that. Obviously you'd have to wait until next semester to start if you take an actual class, but having been in theatre why not also look to extracurricular productions or classes? Or are you credit hungry? :-) Take a good look at your schedule for next semester and see how you would handle your class and work load. Really weigh the pros and cons including considering whether or not if you might blow off some of your academics because you love acting. If your focus might be thrown, maybe it would be better to wait but if you think it would energize you then go for it! Don't forget like I said earlier that it does not have to be a class. There are productions that you likely don't have to be in the class to be a part of. Look in the community around you for other opportunities. There are also student films, check out your school's film department and ask how students cast their projects. Some do this on campus, others list in trade outlets like backstage.com or actorsaccess.com.

good luck!

If you have a solid desire to become an actor you should find some way to develop those skills as soon as possible. It doesn't have to be an acting class. Just reading dramatic literature out loud will help. I think you should probably take advantage of what acting class is available to you, but again, there are other ways to start exploring the craft.

is it possible to just take an into to acting class on top of what you're already taking? only taking theatre classes your last year isn't going to give you hardly any experience you'll need if you're seriously considering pursuing acting. i think you should contact the head of the theatre department and arrange a meeting to discuss what their schedules are like, from there you should be able to make an educated decision. best of luck to you, break a leg!

i say at least finish out the semester and then take your acting classes next semester, if you don't mind taking up other classes that is. but i also say don't drop any other classes. you might want you psychology major to fall back on.

but i say if you love acting and you think it's something you can and want to do for the rest of your life, then do it!

good luck!

it depends.
get into acting? like do it as a job or just on the side for fun.
if you want to do it as a job you need to get your degree in theatre. many auditions require it.
since you have almost all of your credits you should finish your other major too, but I would talk to someone in the theatre department too. we had shadow advisors for ppl who has two focuses.
college and high school and the real world of theatre are way different.
you need to try out for some shows, feel out your natural talent and what you could learn and see where you stack up.
best of luck! :)
(i do theatre in real life)

i think your advisor is right!
get your degree so if the acting thing doesn't work out, you already have something to fall back on!!!
