Many people who consider suicide are suffering from depression. And a severely depressed person doesn't feel inclined to do ANYTHING... even kill themselves. Psychologists have long observed sad-but-true cases of people who only had enough energy and motivation to finally go through with suicide because they were actually recovering from their depression. If they had just held on a little longer, they might no longer have felt a need to take such drastic action. Sad.

I think there are two reasons why, even if a person is at the point of wanting to take their own life, they don't are:
1. the built-in human trait to survive
2. the fear of failing the attempt and being put through all kinds of stuff like; counselling, hospitalization, labelled "crazy", institutionalized, shunned etc.
Sometimes these thoughts come as a result of clinical depression. Telling someone to "pull up their socks and get over it" doesn't cut it. Depression is a disease just like diabetes. If anyone has gotten to that point I urge you to see you doctor. Thoughts of suicide are not just because things aren't going you way for now, or you're bored, it is much more SERIOUS than that. Seek professional help. Thank goodness there is hesitation in taking one's own life!!

I don't think it's a lack of courage to want to keep living. I think it is much more courageous to continue on in the hope that things can always improve. Being unemployed or bored don't seem like good reasons to kill yourself. Suicide, except perhaps for those terminally ill or who are responsible for an enormous crime, is not an act I normally associate with 'integrity.'

Suicide id typically done out of desperation and despair. Depression is also a typical factor. Sometimes individuals feel there is no other way to end the pain. It is a question many people wonder about, especailly when it happens to someone you know. I guess it all depends on the individual circumstances and that person internal thoughts and feelings about those circumstances. And, sometimes we are ment to know why and other times we are not. In the end, it is ultimately the personal choice of the individual suffering.

i think its fate, a spark of intervention, that often prevents a suicide from happening
yes, there is a strong human survival instinct, and yes sometimes the person comes to realize that it isnt the answer
but often, i truly think its fate, the means are just not there at the moment the person decides, or they try and its not successful, or a particular intervention happens, that phone call or that drinking till they go to sleep and awaken with some hope, etc etc
rather then religious, i think in terms of the spirit, who exactly knows all the deciding factors in why our spirit was born to this earth, this life? and who knows all the factors of why we leave when we do, whether by our own hand or others?
and what is our mental state that causes us to make the choices we do? while we understand suicide as being doing something to ourselves to end our lives, and consciously saying this, how different are our unrecognized forms of suicide? if we eat fat and fried foods, and ignore our health, we pretty much are playing Russian roulette with having a heart attack, the same with entering the military, or driving without a seat belt on, or speeding, smoking, ingesting so many preservatives in our foods, continuing to use products from China, etc etc we know we are risking our lives, only the "in denial " people can say with a straight face that they are not risking killing theirselves, taking a part in their own deaths

I think the answer is hope. If a person thinks there is the slightest bit of hope that their condition can change, they will not do it despite the emotional or physical pain they are currently in. But, if they think there is no hope at all, well then, there is nothing to stop them and that might be their only choice to end the suffering.

Uncertainty. You say death will be the end of suffering, but do you KNOW that with certainty? There's too much religious nonsense in the world for people to have no fears about death.

Completely a lack of courage and cowardice, you are right. Those who actually go through with it are actually strong people (if that makes any sense).
