AM radio top 40 stations which lumped pop, soul, and motown with rock. FM radio was mainly classical music with a few "underground" (college) rock stations. TV shows American Bandstand, Ed Sullivan, Hullabaloo, Shindig. Couple of music magazines whose names escape me, and that's about all I can remember!
How else did we listen to and/or get information on all those great bands back then? Or did we have to wait til years later?

Word of mouth and the fact that there wasn't a lot of bands/groups to choose from back then. In the 60's there was an average of 8,000 albums released per year. In 2006 there were over 65,000 cd's released. The staying power and ease of focusing on one group was easier back then because of that fact.

Word of mouth is a powerful tool.
