Okay, first of all. . .this is NOT illegal everywhere in the U.S. by any stretch of the imagination. The age of consent varies from state to state and can be 16, 17 or 18, again, depending on the state you are in. In California, the age of consent is 18, so sexual intercourse between the two would be illegal for the 20 year old. (Dating, alone, is not illegal.) However, because there is no more than 3 years age difference between the two, it would be a misdemeanor offense, not a felony.

It is not illegal anywhere for any two people to DATE. The problem arises when they decide to engage in sex. Then the ages become a potential source of trouble. It is assumed that someone "under the age of consent" is incapable of giving consent to the act, so it is no defense to claim that they consented. The age of consent in California is 18, so while the 20 year old and 17 yr can date, if they have sex, the 20 year old could be charged with rape/sexual assault.

Dating has nothing to do with the age of consent (the age of consent refers to sexual contact, which is not limited merely to intercourse).
There are no laws in any state regarding dating.
The two can date, as long as the minor’s parents agree to allow it, because parents of minors (those under 18) have the right to determine who their child is and isn’t allowed to spend time with.
Sexual contact between the two is illegal.

In CA, the age of consent is 18. If dating leads to sex, that would become a problem - it will be considered statutory rape. Since the age difference is 3 years, it will be a misdemeanor charge.

Yes and no. You can go out, but if you have sex, get caught and prosecuted, you will be a sex offender.
Note to kp, help me with reporting the black panda issue, please.
