You should change it at least as often as it recommends on the package to avoid getting toxic shock syndrome or some other infection (and to avoid leakage).

It is perfectly safe to not change your tampon every time you go to the bathroom. You will not have any odors or anything if you don't. People that wear pads are sporting odors because the blood sits externally on the pad and it begins to smell.
Tampons are great because they keep the mess internally, thus you won't smell like people that use pads. You can still pee and such with out interfering with your tampon. Some people like to move the string out of way while peeing. Some prefer not risking peeing on their hands over the silly string.
It is important to change your tampon at least every 8 hours. Every box comes with instructions 8 hours is the maximum amount of time to leave a single tampon in. Tampons are perfectly safe to use, as long as you do not leave them in pass that time.
Don't listen to the people that tell you putting tampons in are bad. I think wearing pads is completely unsanitary, with tampons there is a lot less mess. If tampons were not safe to use they would not be FDA approved, or sold in stores.
Also it's important to use the smallest absorbency you need. If you're using supers and changing your tampon at 8 hours and there is still a lot of white, or un-used portion of the tampon.. you need to switch to regular tampons or light tampons. Having tampons mostly full when you go to change them makes it easier to remove them.
I hope this helps.

Nothing. Just change as needed and no longer than eight hours. That would be a lot of tampons if I changed every time I went to the bathroom

You need change it more often than you expect. You could get TSS. If I were you read the package or website, that it will tell you about TSS issue. Really not suppose leave the tampon for long period of time. Suppose to change it every 4 hours a day. If you still leak in between the trip. You can use the pad or panty liner. The panty liner are best than pad. If your period were heavy. You will need tampon. All depend on how much your flow, are you getting?

As long as you change it every four to six hours you will be ok.
I've never changed it every time I've gone to the bathroom and I've been using tampons for 22+ years.

Wells for one, it's unsanitary. You might smell a little bit. You are putting yourself at risk for toxic shock syndrome. Meaning you are just poisoning yourself by not changing a bloody tampon. Also, you could develop a yeast infection. I got one when I was younger because I did not change it everytime I peed. So save yourself the pain, and change it everytime you go to the bathroom

You might have a leak in between trips. Use a panty liner, or pad if your periods are heavy. When blood shows on the liner, then it is time to change the tampon, but you can leave tampons in overnight without worrying about toxic shock syndrome. Gee the guys are gonna learn all our secrets on here arent they? haha :)
