It seems like it should be a legal tackle to me, unless it's considered 'unsportsmanlike conduct' or something.

As people have stated, it is legal to do this. It was actually done in the Cowboys game last week - A player pulled Marion Barber down by his dreads. needless to say Barber had some words for him.

It's perfectly legal to tackle a ball carrier by the hair. A few yeas ago Ray Lewis pulled Ricky Williams down by his dreads. The NFL said if your hair comes out of your helmet it's part of your uniform. Ricky "High times" Williams soon cut all of his off. If you notice most football players with long hair are on defense. On defense if someone grabs your hair it's holding.

Damn, Ashley R looks to be pretty fine.

No it's not a penalty - hair is considered part of the uniform. LJ yanked Palomalu down by his hair after an interception last year. LJ got a penalty, but it was for taunting after the play.

it is absolutely 100% legal - I'd encourage it as a coach. Mostly you see defensive players with the long hair, but if they're returning an INT, anything goes.

It is in college. Oklahoma lost to Colorado because of it. (They had Colorado stopped, and got a 15 yard penalty that gave them a first and goal).

Actually, the answer is NO. Is not a penalty.
Which is why you only see this on players on defense.

Sooner or later, football will be forced to become politically correct and make it a penalty. They are discriminating against people with nappy dreads.
