Coffee is not allowed in rest homes unless it is decaf. Coffee is also not allowed in county jails...only chickory beverages. Medical professionals SAY coffee is bad for your joints, yet they have no prove. They also say it is bad for your heart & blood pressure, yet no proof exists. So, I pose this question...DOES caffeine cause some type of inner turmoil for seniors that puts them at odds with everyone, or just those who mix caffeine with meds (blood pressure, etc) & stress out to the point of being a health risk that puts a financial burden on insurance companies & themselves.

For the record, I am 54 & consider this to be a relevant question that is not intended to offend anyone. It is simply a question that I was curious about. Caffeine seems to pose some type of risk to the user...even in print!

The health risks I was referring to were related to the misinformation that many seniors & people of lower income levels seem to be receiving from sub-standard medical care & over-worked staff who either have no knowledge, little knowledge, or incorrect knowledge to share with patients who have MULTIPLE HEALTH ISSUES & are considered to be "high risk" patients.
NUTRITION is often ignored as a viable way of healing people or at least lessening the often over-perscribed & overused medications that can & do kill people when they have a simple thing like a cup of coffee. (caffeine)
Thus, a little thing like caffeine could become a financial burden to taxpayers if this "trend" of ignoring health & nutrition to aid in the healing of patients on state & federal aid continues on the path that it is now on. Seniors seem to be ignored due to the little talked about fact that we are dying & it doesn't occur that QUALITY of LIFE is better than QUANTITY for some older citizens.

If that is the case regarding the rest homes' policy on coffee, then I would be worried. Most decaf coffee is rendered that way by the use of formaldehyde in removing the caffeine. That's embalming fluid! Maybe the administrators of those places are sending a hidden message to the residents. LOL!

I've worked in nursing homes and they could have caffeinated coffee and tea and sodas if they wanted. They may not allow certain ones maybe to have it past 5 or something if they were having sleeping problems. My father was a major coffee drinker but as he got older his stomach couldn't tolerate it.
Living is a health risk since no matter what you do you don't get out of here alive anyway. People either pay for their own insurance or they've paid into SS for their entire working life and I seriously doubt caffeine would bankrupt a company or a country for caring for elderly people during their last periods of life. If they're at odds with each other there's a host of other reasons that might lead to their less than docile behavior besides caffeine. Trust me....unless something happens that makes it so I can't tolerate Diet Coke......you will have one nasty old lady on your hands if some nimrod tells me I can't have it. It's not like giving it up is going to make me 20 years younger or guarentee I won't die from some other illness, so I say butt out and let people enjoy their final days.
I've lived long enough and seen "health issues" change a dozen times over. There's not a whole lot they can say is a 100% cause of anything. I'm more concerned about what disease is hidden in my food now that cause serious illness and death. Who would have thought people would die from spinach? But they have. There's more chemicals and toxins in our systems that even "healthy" people have, simply from going outside or drinking water.....little late to start preaching at the elderly when they've made it this far. There dues have been paid....don't make it worse than it already is.
Jails aren't the same as elderly people. Elderly people haven't committed a crime. If there are jails that don't serve it, it might be because it's a perk they don't deserve.

I hate that the government and States are dictating what one can eat and drink. The education is out there for people to make there own choices based on their health. My Mom is 82 and in great health except for high blood pressure and she drinks regular coffee all the time, 2 or 3 cups a day and it doesn't affect her health adversely. I think individuals should be able to make their own choices based on what their body tells them.

Whoa, I can't believe a state would ban caffeine in jails and nursing homes. As far as I know they are not here. Financial burden, I think not I have paid all my life to those funds and most seniors that I know eat healthy and junk food and drinks in moderation. I was just wondering if chocolate and some Koolaide were also banned as they to have caffeine along with many other foods.
I think the real burden will be the younger generations and their addiction to fast food

Your info is not all factual. Caffeine is offered in many homes for seniors and assisted living. It is also recommended now in moderation by many physicians. Caffeine also helps those with migraines. My patients who take hypertensive meds can also take a cup or two of coffee or tea or a cola a day.

I can not speak for everyone, but, my poor old stomach will not tolerate very much caffeine anymore... At one time I lived on caffeine... I worked way to hard and fast to have time to eat properly. I do not associate "financial burden to taxpayers" with caffeine at all !!?!!
I do still pay taxes, and have since I was 14 years of age...
To me... financial burdens on taxpayers... "Us"... is a sore issue. The incomes of Senators for example... the price the government pays for a hammer, another... Grants for ridiculous reasons... Programs that are a total failure to our people that cost us all a fortune!

Caffeine like most things must be used in moderation. I dont know where you are but in my state nursing home residents can choose regular or de-caf. They are limited as to the amount they can drink according to their personal health matters. The jails here do not ban coffee.

My doctor drinks more coffee than I do. She says she cannot get through the day without it. I wish her office would offer a cup of coffee after we have fasting blood tests. The oil in the coffee distorts some of the tests.
If it's good enough for her, then it's good enough for me.
