LOL @ Gene Simmons in Runaway. Wow. I had forgotten about that.
I may also have to rethink my answer b/c I'd completely forgotten about Dwight in Slingblade. That was Oscar worthy.

There are a few performances I really liked:

- Angela Bassett in "What's Love Got To Do With It". They could not have cast that role better.
- Dwight Yoakam in "Sling Blade". He gave me chills, and not in a good way.
- And, believe it or not, I think former New Kid Donnie Wahlberg is pretty good. He's overshadowed by his brother, but I thought he was good in both "Ransom" and "The Sixth Sense".

I have to agree with the two people who have said Tom Waits in Bram Stoker's Dracula.
David Bowie in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence.
Sting in Quadrophenia.
Meat Loaf in The Rocky Horror Picture Show {whatever other people may think, his performance was perfect for the role!}.

And I hear that over the years Roger Daltrey has given some rather good performances.

Edit :~

I think I saw a few episodes of that about 10 years ago ~ but I must have missed the ones with Roger!

Well, I just found out that Levon Helm of The Band played Loretta Lynn's father in Coal Miners Daughter and has done several other movies to critical acclaim.
I have mentioned Angela Bassett before as Tina Turner.
Gene Simmons in Runaway was classic!

Ice T has really come a long way as an actor. I am consistently surprised at how talented he really is.

I'll tip my hat to Ice Cube as well.

And Dave Matthews stole every scene he was in in "Because of Winn-Dixie."

I thought Snoop Dogg (is that how it's spelled?) was surprisingly good in Training Day. Also, Gavin Rossdale of Bush did a pretty decent job in Constantine. The film was pretty dull though...
