the motherboard in question is a MSI K7N2 delta2, but im asking last as in 'electronically last', not 'keep up with the times last'

if i dont do overclocking, i do regular dusting, i dont overwork it by keeping it on 24/7.. how long can it last and not burn/short a circuit? are there any ways to help it last?

well basically a better comp had just replaced the system with this mobo on it, and since nothing could be recycled to add on to the new system, i thot of keeping it as a third PC, but was worried that it would conk out cos i was thinking of getting some upgrades for it.

the mobo is about 2.5years old now.. it uses DDR RAM and AMD1.2Ghz processor. was thinking of adding RAM and/or upgrading the processor to the highest supported processor.

the system is intended for very simple games (like majong solitare or web flash games), web surfing, maybe office.. easy stuff cos its for the parents..

any thoughts?

sorry just wanted to add, i know that DDR RAM is much more exp compared to DDR2, but the mobo doesnt support it, and i also know everyone is like core2duo now, but like i said the usage is really juz simple stuff, so i was hoping i get it to be faster than it is now and it would last 5years of simple usage?

It should be able to last over a decade (even if you don't dust it) provided it isn't hooked up to a bad power supply.

Having your computer on 24/7 though isn't overworking, it's perfectly fine if you want to do it.

The only thing that you will need to replace motherboard battery after 5 years or so. I will last as it is well ventilated 10 or 15 years

I have some motherboards from 25 years ago that are still working just fine. So what is the question? I don't use them except for door stops now. The technology changes so fast that now all they are really good for is to plug them up and use them as heaters.

I had my mobo installed in 2001. I just replaced it last week, and not because it wasn't working, but because I was given a better one for free. I had 11 swollen caps, and it was still running. So....mine was 6 years, living on a wing and a prayer, but still going.

A motherboard can work forever practically if you keep good care of it. But things happen and sooner or later something would probably happen that will blow something out, but good thing that replacement motherboards for older computers aren't that much.
