One of the attractiveness of IBM is that they have a very large amount of business overseas. With the bottom dropping out of the $ and their revenue somewhat insulated from that, their bottom line earnings in U S $ should benefit greatly. Their computers are the best available. Their software is also the best available.

Two new things are cooking at IBM.
First, they have some new personal computer/gaming technology. In a consortium with Toshiba and Sony, the Sony playstation 3 is their processor's trial balloon. IBM is giving a large amount of resources to build software that takes advantage of the multiple processors (9) that divy up computing work.
Second, IBM is a pioneer and major player in nanotechnology. Decades ago they had watchers bumfuzzled when they were announcing work in manipulating individual atoms--as in what does that have to do with computers. The day will come when you could be wearing a supercomputer the size of a color fleck in a woman's nail polish, and all of the steps and stages in between, IBM will have a piece of the technology rights.
I may not live long enough to see it, but the stuff IBM is working on is a reinventing of technology. They aren't alone, but they are certainly the big bull of those woods. To use still another analogy, buying IBM is like planting a redwood tree, its going to be huge some day.
