Many test have shown that milk thistle helps the liver regenerate and therefore is helpful for your health. However, these claims are not 100% conclusive yet and more test has to be done. It is best for a heavy drinker to reduce alcohol intake and drink moderately.

Milk thistle can work but will take quite a long time to build drinking stamina. Try: 1. eating food 30 min. before starting to drink 2. eating bread aznd butter (butter helps with alcohol) 3. order a "water back" with each drink (it is a glass of water. With each drink have at least half a glass of water and while you will still "feel the alcohol" you will be able to tolerate much more in your system)

Not much compared to the damage the drinking does. If you have liver damage due to the drinking, the only answer is to cut out alcohol. Milk thistle will not allow you to contine abusing alcohol.

Numerous studies have shown that the powerful antioxidant bioflavonoid silymarin can protect the liver from the toxic effects of excess alcohol, which helps to reduce the chances of alcohol liver disease.
It does by working as a potent antioxidant stopping factors such as free radicals causing liver cell damage.
Plus, silymarin helps to boost an important liver antioxidant enzyme called glutathione.
Silymarin alters the structure of liver cells to protect against toxins as well as helping to regenerate toxin damaged liver cells.
It also helps to reduce fibrosis.
To help protect against alcohol liver disease, you can take milk thistle in supplement form, in doses up to 200mg three times per day.
It is best to take these doses between meals.
Note: Milk thistle has a mild laxative effect, so be wary of taking too much.

It helps and is frequently used, but it does not help other problems that drinking can cause.
