I got into the habit of putting the seat AND the top down when I'm finished. So, girls, if you come to my place, be sure the top is up before you do your business.
And when you use the toilet paper, be sure to leave a "flag" so the next person doesn't have to look for the end. haha. ;+)
BTW, there is no "Dark in the middle of the night" in my bathroom. I installed a 20 watt light that is on a motion detector.
If the guys are over for a football game the protocol is to leave the seat up, though. But when I host a game like that there's usually a couple of gals there, too.
So many options.... I say be observant when you go into a bathroom that is not your own, use it and restore it like you find it. That means, ladies, that if you're at a single guy's place and he likes it UP, when you're finished, put it back up. When I'm at a woman's place, I put it down.
I like the kid's foot lever invention, too.

Sorry, I am a laydeeee! I felt compelled to answer because, despite my lovely new bathroom being finished 3 weeks ago by my Hubby, he sat on it yesterday and the seat snapped in half! At present we do not have a toilet seat or lid.
It wasn't cheap and we are taking it back to B & Q tomorrow but it's b****y cold sitting on the porcelain!

I know you said guys but here is a female prospective. Put the seat back on and leave it down, you never know when a lady may come over.

as long as no one want to sit on it, up is preferred, however if you do sit down while the seat is up, you will wish you had left it down.
ever if you butt is big enough that you don't hit the water, the porcelain is usually ice cold, and a real eye opener in the middle of the night.
but if their are ladies in the house, be a gentleman, and put the seat down.
even if the lady is your mother-in-law.
or your wifes obnoxious friend.

Strange, I've always put the seat down as well as the lid.
Just got tired of fishing my toothbrush out of the porcelain pond.
Fortunately for to the ladies that works out well for their use, too.

As long as they put it up when they go I don't have any problems. Although its nice to have it down so you don't hit the cold porcelain when you make a trip in the dark during the night.

When you're using the toilet, lift the lid and set it over by the catalogue, when finished cover the hole back up with the lid to keep the vermin out.
