x = pennies in a jar, x + 40 = pennies in another jar
Pennies in a jar:
x + x + 40 = 150
2x = 110
x = 55
Pennies in another jar:
= 55 + 40
= 95
Answer: there are 55 in one, 95 in another
Proof:
55 + 95 = 150

95 and 55. 150 minus 40 is 110. 110 divided by 2 is 55. 55 plus 40 is 95.

I came up with 115 & 35, but I hate story problems.
150 divided by 2 jars=75, 75+40 "more" pennies in the other jar=115, 150-115=35...
I think "more" was missing from the main question...

A + B = 150, hence A = 150 - B
A - B = 40
substitute:
(150 - B) - B = 40
150 - 2B = 40
-2B = -110
B = 55
A = 95
