Diamond trade: Kimberley Process, one of Canada's best friends
Last Updated June 7, 2007
By Sabrina Saccoccio CBC News
In 1991, this country's first kimberlite pipe, the deep-lying volcanic rock that diamonds are formed in, was discovered in the Northwest Territories, and since then, Canada has become third in world diamond production by value, only after Botswana and Russia.
Kimberlite is one thing Canada has in common with Africa, but diamond production is not. Canada is upheld for its "clean diamonds," while the gems-for-guns trade has fuelled some African civil wars.

Connections between diamond dealers and warlords — as well as Sierra Leone rebels who hacked off thousands of limbs in a conflict funded by illicit diamond trading — spurred the agreement known as the Kimberley Process.
Nearly 50 countries entered into the pact, assuring they would only deal in diamonds from conflict-free sources. It was ratified at a meeting of the diamond-producing states in Kimberley, South Africa. THIS ARTICLE MAY GIVE YOU SOME CLUES. TO MY KNOWLEDGE DIAMONDS ARE FOUND IN MOST COUNTRIES WITH ANCIENT VOLCANIC ACTIVITY. THEY WERE A COMMON ITEM OF TRADE IN THE TIME OF JESUS AND EVEN BEFORE. DIAMONDS WERE FOUND IN THE TOMBS OF ANCIENT PHARAOHS.

Roughly 49% of diamonds originate from central and southern Africa, although significant sources of the mineral have been discovered in Canada, India, Russia, Brazil, and Australia. They are mined from kimberlite and lamproite volcanic pipes, which brought to the surface the diamond crystals from deep in the Earth where the high pressure and temperature enables the formation of the crystals. The mining and distribution of natural diamonds are subjects of frequent controversy such as with concerns over the sale of conflict diamonds (aka blood diamonds) by African paramilitary groups.

Russia, Brazil, Australia and India. Also please be advised that Africa is not a country. There are many countries that produce diamonds in Africa mainly South Africa with other countries such as Namibia not far behind.
However you can learn more about the diamond process at:

most come from south africa (49% of the worlds diamonds), but canada has some new mines in the NW territories that are yielding very well. you can also mine diamonds in the US in a few places, Arkansas has a state park where you can dig for your own. Russia, Brazil and Australia are also main sources of diamonds

They actually can be found in many places around the world... A great flick that explaines everything about the diamond mining industry and it's politics is Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio.
