Try Lauren Willig's books... The History of the Pink Carnation, The Masque of the Black Tulip and The Deception of the Emerald Ring...it's got history, mystery, romance and humor. They are surprisingly great beach reads.
Also, I'm glad to hear you like the Constant Princess...I just got it, but haven't opened it yet. I'll have to get started on that this weekend!

I'm sorry, I'm not huge on history fiction books. However I recommend the Barnes and Noble website. You can narrow it down to historical fictions, and *possibly* narrow it down to guy stories. It's a good way to just take a look, without actually spending the outragous gas money to go to the store. Good luck!

books by Rosalind Miles, Margaret George, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Nancy McKenzie
Some of these (particularly Bradley and Miles) blend historical fiction with fantasy, but they all feature very strong and dynamic female characters.

I also love any Bertrice Small book. The Skye O'Malley series is fantastic. That series focuses around Queen Elizabeth I, but all of her books are just great and cover all time periods. Let me know if you check any of them out and what you think.

Almost all books by Avi, especially the True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, in your case. The Misadventures of Maude March is also a good one.
