After I installed some custom content (things like furniture and clothes), the game wouldn't get past "crenellating crenellations" at the splash page. It would crash.

I'm not sure if it's the custom content, or whether it's because of my laptop... but if it keeps stopping at the specific point I'm guessing it has to do with the game. Oh, and in case you need to know, I have Windows Vista.

Take out the custom content; if it loads, you'll know it was the content. If it doesn't load, it's likely a combination of your laptop and Vista; Vista needs a huge amount of resources to run. I'm surprised your laptop has enough to run Vista and Sims - that could be the issue.
