The Avs play Dallas tonight, their coach Dave Tippett is apparently about to be fired if he can't turn around the Stars' slide. Among the candidates mentioned for his replacement is Avs' assistant coach, Tony Granato. What will happen with Tony G's contract? He probably can't just say "see ya later" to the Avs...Will the Stars have to buy out his contract, and pay the Avs some money?

Hull and Hicks have told Tippett and his agent that he will not be fired this year, and yesterday they entered talks to extend Tippett's contract.

And any assistant coach is free to break his contract for any reason whatsoever without compensation, in the case of head coaches, compensation is a possibility, but is rarely requested.

I doubt that Granato would want to leave the Avs. He had his chance at a head coaching job with the Avs a couple years ago, he stepped down by his own will, he quit and became our assistant. I don't think he wants the responsibility of another head coaching position.

I'd be very surprised it Tony wanted to leave Denver or even be a head coach again. He felt the experience the first time around was rather traumatic and resigned (despite media reports that said he was fired but were denied by both Granato and the team).

I've known Tony and his baby sister for 30 years and talk to them frequently and he keeps saying he likes the life as an assistant.

But, if he were to switch and coach Dallas, I'd have to switch my allegiances to follow!

Hicks was on the Dallas news last night defending the moves he has made and they defended Tippett as well blaming Armstrong for the team's performance on the ice.

Hicks basically blames the newspapers and radio stations for putting fear into the coach and players that doesn't exist.

We'll see what happens over the course of the year though....if the players Armstrong brought into the organization are as bad as Hull and Hicks seem to think they are.............then I doubt a coaching change would help anyway.
