I need serious help and would really appreciate serious answers.
My family has been hit hard with serious illness and the housing crash. It looks like were heading for financial doom. How can I make the holidays nice, when everyone is feeling so down? I'm pretty unhappy myself, but I'm willing to try because I want more than anything for my daughter (16) to be happy. Got any ideas?

your good attitude is 95% of it.

When our family was in similar situation a long time ago, my parents just told us Christmas was going to suck and not to expect any gifts for a few years and not to whine about it or we'll get a kick in the *** for christmas.

Try to do what you can to keep the spirits up! Decorate with things you have, and enjoy what you have... family, friends. People will understand if you can't do anything for them if you explain. Try, as hard as you can to make your kids appreciate the small things in life... things you make together for gifts for eachother... or have a contest to see who can get the coolest thing for $2... something like that. Go to the thrift stores, and find some nice gently used stuff instead of buying new. Join an area freecycle website to see what people are offering for free. There is a lot of stuff you can do - most importantly, remember the reason of the season.

They know that Christmas this year may not be as good as other christmases from the past, so create a new tradition. get your family together to bake one day, the next put up your decorations, go look t christmas lights on peoples houses. Look into free plays going on in your area to take the kids too. Get a bunch of craft stuff and have them make each other gift. You would be surprised at how much better it will be for them if you pretend to have the christmas spirit too. The christmas spirit is contagious, if you have it (or really pretend too) then they will too. Good luck, Merry CHristmas.

Put the family focus on another family who is even worse off somehow, perhaps by ensuring you buy a few gifts for foster children or whatever program is available in your area to help others. Sell off some stuff you might own to buy presents for the daughter and the others who are even worse off.

Instead of doing an expensive feast, just do a simple dinner-- whatever is affordable and get the whole family in on it (Potluck).

Play board games, card games, watch movies, or anything that involves groups or the whole group. Just enjoy the company of each other-- it'll be fun!!

Just whatever you do-- remain positive, it'll be hard, but so worth it.
