My brother in law used rubbing alcohol on his jeep to "clear it out" but I'm afraid to do that. I drive a 1998 Ford Expedition and it has a 30 gallon tank. It'll hold anywhere from 24 to 26 gallons but never close to 30. What should I do?

You probably shouldn't be doing that.

The tank will hold the full capacity but the gauge on pretty much every car is inaccurate and will tend to read Empty when there is still some fuel left (probably a good thing for the idiots who try to wait until the tank is empty before refilling) which will prevent you from actually pumping the full capacity into your vehicle (though you shouldn't be letting it get even to empty, on fuel injected vehicles it's a bad idea to let the tank go below 1/4).

In short I wouldn't worry about it (and don't try to overfill either, when the pump cuts out that's all you should take, overfilling will just result in the extra petrol evaporating away which is bad for the environment (but given what you drive you might not care all that much) as well as costing you extra money).

it does hold 30 the gauge reads empty when there is a couple gallons left it needs that fuel to keep the fuel pump working if you ever run out of fuel you can damage the pump
it will cost you $500 to replace the pump
rubbing alcohal isnt what you use to clean out anything exept maby water use 1 quart auto trans fluid to 10 galons fuel or add fuel injection cleaner

Normally there are some air trap inside the gas tank thus it would not fill up to the maximun amount.

1) U need to fill it up to the max,(in yr case 24-26 gallons), once its there. stop pumping gas, shake your car either from side to side or up & down (press on the one corner of the car) repeately.

2) Some of the air trapped inside will then escape, this will allow u to pump in more gas,

3) repeat action (1) & (2) till u can't pump in any more gas,,,,

put some fuel treatment in it. plus if its reading empty when you fill up your float in the tank or your gauge may be messed up
