Whenever I turn it on it smells like something is burning....it smells horrible...like how plastic burning smells. Any ideas? We haven't used it for the whole summer....is it just that we haven't used it for so long or what? The area we live in has a lot of moisture in the air....it gets really hot during the day and really cold during mornings/nights.

I'll try leaving it on for more than a second...hopefully that will get rid of it.

Last time it was cleaned was six months ago. There is dust on the filter...maybe that's it to.

I just got one of these and it filled my entire 2 story house with a chemical smell and I know what is smells like when dust is burning, my other space heater does this. This is a different smell right out of the box. It's terrible!

I believe it is the chemical finishes put on the product. For whatever reason cheap space heaters and toasters have a plastic-like chemical smell to them right out of the box. You don't even have to turn them on to smell it. Then when they are turned on it spreads the smell to the whole room, as opposed to only being able to smell it up close. It is some sort of finish on the metal or plastic within the unit. I really wonder why this is the case.

Heaters usually have a burnt smell the first time they are turned on after a long period of time of no use. I believe it is burning off dust or something to that effect.

If the smell doesn't go away after an hour or 2, then there is something wrong. Right now it is just burning the dust (and other particles) and that is normal.

Dust settles on the heating units during warm months and when turned on will burn after a few minutes the smell will dissipate.

When you first turn on your heater after it had been idle for the summer, dust collects on the elements, it's the dust that is making the smell, it should go away after a few minutes of use..

It maybe because it's older. I have one and it's a newer model and it has a smell when I turn it on too and I think it's just dust on the coils burning off when it's heating up.

Probably needs to be cleaned out. Filters probably fillled dirty (like the lint trap in the dryer) - get a new filter (at home depot or lowes) and switch it out. If it still smells, the ducts may have to be cleaned and you need to hire someone for that.

Sounds like there is something seriously wrong with it, and that 'burning smell' could end up with your home in a pile of ashes. Stop using it until you call an electrician.
