Does it protect your eye better than the "fat" monitor?

I hear a lot about "radiation" and "harmful" rays on the eyes but haven't heard about people going blind from it...maybe I just need to listen more.

Anywho...

1. You get better contrast ration on the LCD. Crisper text. Easier to read, etc., which reduces eye strain.

2. You don't get the slight flicker that even high-end CRTs have that can causes eye strain and horrible headaches after an extended use.

3. They're cheaper to dispose of at the end of their useful life and less harmful to the environment.

-less energy consumption (well a little bit anyway)
-bigger screen areas, smaller footprint
-digital interface and HDCP compatibility (will become more important as Bluray/HDDVD discs and drives become more common)
- quicker power-up from sleep/off
- no flicker which can prevent eyestrain compared to old or incorrectly configured CRT monitors - this can be quite noticable!

The downsides are
- They don't handle different display resolutions as well - this can be a real pain if you have a sluggish graphics card and you like playing newish games... lcd's are manufactured with a certain number of dots (pixels - eg 1680 x 1050 in size) and forcing them to stretch the image which causes it to be blurry.
- The screen is often hard to see from a non-front on position - this can be a bonus at times!

On an LCD, the 17" is the same as the viewable because the monitor is flat.

No. But that is because monitors do not do any damage to your eyes. How you use the monitor can cause eye strain but that is something different.

LCDs compared to CRTs:
are brighter.
have no geometry issues.
consume less power.
smaller and lighter.
are very crisp and clear at the native resolution of the panel.
have no flicker issues.
are not susceptible to magnetic fields

They also:
reproduce colours less accurately.
can have problems with gray scales in terms of getting the right level of gray and getting the right gray as opposed to an off-white gray.
are blurry when not at the native resolution of the panel
are more expensive.

I don't think it protects your eye, but they emit less radiation, the picture is usually better and LCDs use less energy than CRTs.
