Normally, you are probationary for a set amount of time (90 days is the norm) and if the company likes the way you have performed your duties, they offer you a permanent position.

Probation is simply a set period of time, usually 90 days, during which the employee and employer each decide whether the job is right for the person, whether he or she "fits in" and so on. At the end of the 90 days, the probation period ends, assuming all goes well enough and the employee is then out of probation.
Of course, you may have to determine whether or not there is "secret probation" or "double secret probation". LOL
